Moneyball Paper free essay sample
How the Detroit Took Home-Field from the Yanks Many average fans view baseball as merely a game or another sport. But when you shift from an average fan to a baseball fan that idea changes quickly. Baseball fans, partially because of their obsession with statistics, are often view as more intellectual than their average counterparts. Furthermore, baseball fans are aware of what is happening in the game even if it canââ¬â¢t be seen watching the game on television. Both these traits can be fully derived from insight given in George Willââ¬â¢s Men at Work and Michael Lewisââ¬â¢ Moneyball. These books provide the reader with a detailed look at the inside of the game. By using that insight a baseball fan should be able to understand the various strategies and what events proved critical in any given game. Game 2 of the ALDS between the Detroit Tigers is a good example. We will write a custom essay sample on Moneyball Paper or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page While any fan would agree that it was a thrilling game it takes knowing the overriding themes of both these authors to understand what were the turning points that led Detroit to victory. Game 1 of this series did not go as expected. Intense rainstorms forced the game to be played over two days and greatly affected the managerial strategies enacted by both teams. Because rain cancelled the game Friday after only 1 and a half innings, both teams opted to bring in their scheduled Game 2 starters to finish the game when it resumed Saturday. New York ended up winning that game 9-3, and taking a 1-0 series lead. That delay, however, put managers Jim Leyland (Detroit) and Joe Girardi (New York) in a precarious situation. Would they choose to resend out their aces on a dayââ¬â¢s rest and risk injury and fatigue or would they rely on their number three starter and face the fact that both teamââ¬â¢s ace would pitch only one game this series? Joe Giradi decided on the former by sending Freddy Garcia to the mound, a seasoned veteran enjoying coming off a solid regular season (12 wins, 3. 62 ERA). Leyland had a tougher decision to make. The reason Scherzer was in the three spot to begin with is that Leyland wanted him to pitch in Detroit, where he has had much more success. Since Scherzer is a fly ball pitcher, he is best suited for a spacious ballpark like Detroitââ¬â¢s. Yankees Stadium is the exact opposite, with a close right field wall in a place built for home runs. In the end Leyland decided to go with Scherzer, who had already had some success against the Yankees that season. The Tigers wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as their opportunistic offense scored two runs in the top of the 1st. After Garcia recorded two outs and gave up a single to the first three batters he faced, Miguel Cabrera, Detroitââ¬â¢s MVP candidate and American League Batting Champion, stepped up to the plate. Cabrera, who had 9 hits in his 23 career at-bats against Garcia (including three homeruns) hit a two-run homerun to right field, a shot that would not have been a homerun in most ballparks. Garcia, however, recollected himself and ended the inning with an emphatic strikeout of Victor Martinez. Tigers 2, Yankees 0. In the bottom of the inning, Max Scherzer retired both the legendary Derek Jeter and MVP candidate Curtis Granderson before facing the Yankees number three hitter, Robinson Cano. Cano had dominated the night before, knocking in six runs with two outs in a Yankeesââ¬â¢ rout. To avoid potential disaster, Scherzer refused to throw Cano anything he could hit and walked him on four straight pitches. Scherzer then walked the next batter, Alex Rodriguez, and as Mark Teixeira approached the plate, the run thirsty Yankee fans went into an uproar. Facing a 3-1 count, Scherzer induced Teixeira to fly out, and successfully survived his first jam of the evening. Tigers 2, Yankees 0. The next couple innings were defined by dominant pitching. After a 1-2-3 out 2nd, Garcia gave up a two out single to Magglio Ordonez in the 3rd, his second in two at-bats. The threat was avoided though when Alex Rodriguez made a tremendous diving catch to record the third out.

In America, it is universally accepted by medical practitioners that ADHD is a medical disorder affecting behavioral patterns. In 1998, the American Medical Association concluded that ADHD diagnosis is carried out on the facets of external observable resea rch, which when critically monitored, may lead to a reliable result. Thus, this research essay attempts to confirm that Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a medical condition affecting childhood behavior. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD is a behavioral conditional disorder affecting an estimated eight to ten percent of school going children. Generally, this condition is three times likely to affect boys than girls. However, research done so far is unclear on the reasons surrounding the variance of gender in prevalence rate. Reflectively, children suffering from ADHD are prone to acting with improper coordination between action and consequence (Andrew, 2006). Besides, they are hyperactive and not keen to focus on interactive discussion. Though they understand expectations from parents, peers, and teachers, there is serious trouble in interpreting and following the expected due to restlessness. Thus, the victim cannot sit still, attends to fine details, or pay a ttention (Andrew, 2006). As a matter of fact, children of younger age exhibit these behavior characteristics as described when happy, exited, or anxious. It is a common scenario to monitor behavior of younger children when with peers or in the house. However, for ADHD condition, these characteristics are prolonged and occur intently. ADHD ailment impairs the ability of a child to function academically, socially, and at home. From the findings of advanced scientific research, this condition is treatable. The treatment schedule influences ability to learn practical ways of comfortably managing and living with these symptoms (Bee Boyd, 2011).Advertising Looking for research paper on psychology? The onset of ADHD symptoms is at the age before seven years. Globally, infection r ate stands at 3% to 5% among children. Besides, diagnosis rate in school going children is at 2% to 16%. Being a chronic condition, 30% to 50% of the infected children may exhibit persistent symptoms late into adulthood (Bee Boyd, 2011). Notably, adults and adolescents with this condition adopt coping mechanisms as a means of making up for their shortcomings. At present, the statistical estimate of America adults suffering from this ailment is at 4.7 percent (Bee Boyd, 2011). To carry out a standardized and non-biased screening, world bodies such as W.H.O have confirmed this as the official rate of infection. Specific medical conditions associated with ADHD ailment are unknown. However, twin studies reveal that this condition is hereditary with genetic factors accompanying 75% of all infections. In the findings of this research, gene combination affects dopamine transporters associate with behavior determinant code. For instance, LPHN3 gene is believed to influence occurrence of 9% of infections. Besides, environmental factors may contribute to dominance of ADHD in children. Reflectively, tobacco and alcohol exposure at pregnancy may lead to the infant being infected. Nicotine from tobacco depletes oxygen rich blood from reaching the fetus staving it of oxygen (Andrew, 2006). As a result, hypoxia is likely to trigger premature delivery and damage to the babyââ¬â¢s head. Victims of ADHD have prevalent rates of injuries on the head than others. Moreover, infections occurring at delivery and early infantry are also contributory factors. Viruses such as varicella, rubella, measles, and entrerovirus 71 alongside streptococcal infections are secondary agents of ADHD disease (Bee Boyd, 2011). In the findings of the American Medical Association research, carried out in 2007 and 2010, it revealed that insecticides of organophosphate chlorpyrifos form used in treatment of vegetables, affects infant physical and behavioral coordination. Done on a sample of one thousan d and one hundred children of age eight to fifteen, urine samples revealed that those with higher concentration of organic dialkyl, a breakdown product of phosphoric pesticides, were more likely to be infected with ADHD.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Medical Condition of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Also, in a study carried out in 2007 by Southempton linked hyperactivity to sodium benzoate used in America as a food color preservative. Children who consume large quantities of artificial food are at risk of infection. This is because artificial food is often preserved with large quantities of harmful benzoate preservatives. Notwithstanding, the W.H.O has indicated that this ailment is as a result of family dysfunction and inconsistencies in system of education. For instance, complex post Traumatic stress disorder and sensory integration dysfunction may trigge r individual psychopathology climaxing with an onset of ADHD infection (Andrew, 2006). Neglecting or abusing children for a longer period of time may trigger frustrations and overwhelming behavior inconsistency. Patho-physiology reveals that ADHD is associated with the brain malfunctioning. Therefore, impulsivity, hyperactivity, and inattention are symptoms of brain disorder especially in the dorsal anterior cortex. Victims of this ailment exhibits predominant delay in brain response to stimuli causing them to mature at a rate higher than that of normal children (Bee Boyd, 2011). Consistent diagnosis of ADHD infection is inclusive of psychiatric, physical, laboratory, and radiological imaging examinations. For instance, the American Psychiatric Association has classified diagnosis on three facets. These facets explore the symptom characteristics displayed by the victims who are children, teenagers and adults. Irrespective of the age bracket, this ailment displays more or less the sa me symptoms depending on maturity and environmental influences. Classification of ADHD ailment relies on the nature of persistence of symptoms associated with it. For instance, irresponsiveness to impulse control may signify a developmental or growth lag. By use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, scientists and psychologists have discovered an acceptable prefrontal cortex estimating the onset of this ailment between three and five years of age. However, this condition is behavior controlled and not neurological. Psychologists describes ADHD as a disruptive behavioral disorder (Bee Boyd, 2011) consisting of conduct, antisocial, and oppositional defiant disorder (Bee Boyd, 2011). The three subtypes of ADHD include the impulsive, inattentive, and impulsive-inattentive order. Patients who suffer from hyperactive impulsive ADHD are predominantly normal and only display partial symptoms in lifetime. However, those in inattentive class, especially children, experience challenges when interact ing with peers and are prone to retreat into their own world quietly without realizing it. Due to this, this victim may not receive attention from parents, teachers and peers. A combination of impulsive and inattentive types is referred to as a full blown ADHD condition (Andrew, 2006).Advertising Looking for research paper on psychology? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More In childhood, victims of this condition are easily distracted, forgetful, cannot maintain focus in a single task, easily bored, and seem to be distance when being spoken to. When seated, these children squirm a lot and talk nonstop. Within a short time, they dash out and touch everything in sight. In addition, the impaired is prone to restlessness during dinner and story time. Moreover, given the slightest opportunity, the child is likely to remain in motion constantly. Also, when in companion of peers, the impaired is unable to exercise patient in game turns and make inappropriate hurting comments on friends (Bee Boyd, 2011). At teenager, ADHD patient is prone to making careless mistakes in academic work, peer interaction, and decisions. The first symptom is predominant failure to complete homework, exams, and co-curriculum activities. In addition, careless in organizing work of scheme creeps in and forgetful dominate (Andrew, 2006). Moreover, when not in classroom, the impaired is prone to excessive talking accompanied by rebellion when faced by a disagreeing opinion. Generally, there is a feeling of restlessness and an urge to interrupt or intrude a conversation. Regardless of treatment, adolescent victims of full blown ADHD are prone to academic failure. In America alone, 37% of ADHD victims fail to secure high school diploma even when learning in special education programs with only 5% acquiring college degree. Besides, they are at higher risk of injury, auto crashes, earlier conjugal activities, teen pregnancy, and higher expenses on medical treatment (Andrew, 2006). In adults, ADHD infection is characterized by persistent lack of self-motivation and control. As a matter of fact, such an adult is impulsive, inattentive, and hyperactive when interacting with peers. Full blown infection symptoms in adult includes occupational inconsistency, education failure, sexual malfunctioning, poor social relationships, failed marriage, inconsistent dating tendencies, irresponsible parenting, psychological morbidity, frequent drugs and internalized crime activities, and poor financial management skills (Bee Boyd, 2011). Treatment of ADHD consists of psychosocial behavior counseling and therapies such as cognitive, interpersonal, family support, training on social skills, and interventions in school. Besides, short term stimulant medication is by choice. Atomoxetine stimulants are recommended by medics for preschool victims. To manage this condition, an array of medical, behavioral, counseling, and lifestyle modification is the best combination. The hurdles towards ADHD sustainability lies on difficulty to separate its symptoms from other ailments and inefficient training for medical staffs on the best practices of treatment and assessment in patients of adult age (Bee Boyd, 2011). Research indicates that 60% of childhood ADHD infections go into adulthood. However, many of these adults remain untreated. Due to un-treatment, the symptoms develop into disorganization, alcoholism, drug abuse, and chaotic lifestyle. Besides, the victim is at risk of developing anxiety disorder, depression, learning disabilities, and substance abuse. Proper diagnosis may be a solution towards individual insightfulness on behavior and awareness of treatment and coping strategies. However, controversy surrounds the belief that this ailment persist into old age. Among other obstacles to proper diagnosis includes inappropriate diagnosis criteria, comorbidities, and possibility of a link to situational and intelligence levels. Successful treatment in children is a cordial partnership between a doctor, child, and the parents. Stimulant medications are available to calm down the impaired (Bee Boyd, 2011). ADHD affects children and adults. In fact, impact on adults is often devastating on the ability to maintain relationships, work, and family demands. References Andrew, G. (2006). Free Essays on Kennedy & Nixon
KENNEDY AND NIXON BY CHRISTOPHER MATTHEWS REACTION PAPER I see donââ¬â¢t see the book as a bias but the author is always having something good about the both presidents. The author is just trying to talk about two guys who were once buddies then all of a sudden rivalries in politics, and that they both revolutionized the post war America. I have read some other books about Kennedy and they have explained how careless he was in his high school years, and how he never thought of politics and also how he behaved like a screwed up rich kid in his college years. The author never admitted about this but he at least talked about how charming he was and how every girls liked him. I agreed with the author when he explained how easily Kennedy got a chance to run in congress in the Democratic Party by his father who was a rich man and he gave the campaign money to make his son run for the Congress. Nixon was not rich like Kennedy but he was very lucky that he got a call from one of his friends asking him to run for the republican party. During Nixonââ¬â¢s run in the Campaign, his family was broke and had to leave their house in California. I see the author trying to explain the difference between these two former presidents, the author views Nixon as a hard working man that never gives up and has always something to look for and was not really popular much before becoming a president, and Kennedy is a charm, bright young man who does not work as hard as Nixon and also probably not as smart as Nixon might be, but he was a guy who is always popular and gets a lot attention from people, especially women. The one aspect of this book that really impressed me was the detail the author put into describing the campaign strategies of each man. The ugly, the bad and the good - Emphasis
The ugly, the bad and the good The ugly, the bad and the good Some sentences leave you gasping for breath. Try reading aloud this extract from the minutes of a recent meeting of West Lindsey District Council, for example: The Support Services Manager submitted Report 213 advising of progress made in respect of the key tasks which must be addressed by the Council and the guidelines as to when they need to be completed in order that the requirements to introduce Best Value can be met. If youre anything like us, you will have to read it several times to understand what its trying to say. The sentence is too long and would be much clearer written as two separate sentences: The Support Service Manager submitted Report 213 advising of progress made in respect of the key tasks which must be addressed by the Council. It also explains the guidelines as to when the tasks need to be completed in order that the requirements to introduce Best Value can be met. This makes it clearer. But there are still too many redundant words: in respect of; as to when; in order that. And a few passive verbs that make the sentence clumsy and less easy to understand: must be addressed; need to be completed; can be met. A well-placed comma might help too. So lets try again: The Support Service Manager submitted Report 213, outlining the Councils progress on key tasks. The Council must address these tasks within the time guidelines in order to introduce Best Value. OK so its not a sentence thats going to set the world on fire. But at least its quick and easy to read.

Offering your products on the Internet is also convenient for customers. They can browse your online store at any time and place orders when it is convenient for them. Reach By marketing on the Internet, you can overcome barriers of distance. You can sell goods in any part of the country without setting up local outlets, widening your target market. You can also build an export business without opening a network of distributors in different countries. However, if you want to sell internationally, you should use localization services to ensure that your products are suitable for local markets and comply with local business regulations. Localization services include translation and product modification to reflect local market differences. Cost Marketing products on the Internet costs less than marketing them through a physical retail outlet. You do not have the recurring costs of property rental and maintenance. You do not have to purchase stock for display in a store. You can order stock in line with demand, keeping your inventory costs low. Personalization Internet marketing enables you to personalize offers to customers by building a profile of their purchasing history and preferences. By tracking the web pages and product information that prospects visit, you can make targeted offers that reflect their interests. The information available from tracking website visits also provides data for planning cross-selling campaigns so that you can increase the value of sales by customer. Relationships The Internet provides an important platform for building relationships with customers and increasing customer retention levels. When a customer has purchased a product from your online store, you can begin the relationship by sending a follow-up email to confirm the transaction and thank the customer. Emailing customers regularly with special, personalized offers helps to maintain the relationship. You can also invite customers to submit product reviews on your website, helping to build a sense of community. Social Internet marketing enables you to take advantage of the growing importance of social media. An article on the Harvard Business School Executive Education website highlighted the link between social networking and online revenue growth. According to the article, a group of consumers that responded most strongly to the influence of social networks generated increased sales of around 5 percent. You can take advantage of this type of influence by incorporating social networking tools in your Internet marketing campaigns.

Discussing Web Use Especially for Educational Purposes :: Internet Cyberspace Education Essays
Discussing Web Use Especially for Educational Purposes Abstract The purpose of my paper is to define the web, discuss its educational value, and review some of the ongoing debate regarding its educational use. "And Robert L. Heath says ââ¬Ë[It is a] means by which any organization - no matter how financially limited - can sustain its messages over time and reach people around the worldââ¬â¢ " (as cited by Cooley, 1999, p.1). What is the Web? The Web or WWW or World Wide Web is an informational venue, as well as a communications medium that serves many purposes, namely, to advertise businesses, people, products, services; in other words, to facilitate marketing and public relations. "The World Wide Webââ¬â¢s accessibility and ease of use have encouraged a proliferation of Web resources on almost every imaginable topic. Due to the wealth of information available, the Web is becoming a widely used research tool" (Tate and Alexander, 1996, p.1). The Web is also an educational and news delivery system. The Web began with the birth of the internet. According to Sutherland and Stewart (1999), "[t]he Internet, developed in the 1960s to facilitate military research, had expanded to other research uses by the end of the 1970s." Starr (1997) states, that " [by 1981], the Internet had grown to comprise 213 host computers, linked in an unorganized collection of networks that included local area networks, dedicated computer lines, telephone lines and satellite links" (as cited by Sutherland and Stewart, p.1). "Barely a decade later, the Internet had come to include more than 2 million host computers, a growth largely driven by the popularity of the Web, which only became available in 1990" (Sutherland and Stewart, p.1). "Lehnert (1998) stated that this rapid growth of the Web stemmed from the increased availability of inexpensive, powerful computers, widespread access to the Internet, the combination of the easy to use HTML and graphics, readily available Web browsers, and significant a ttention given to the Web by the mass media" (as cited by Sutherland and Stewart, p.1). Starr said that "[T]he Web, with its innovations in the areas of hypertext, multimedia, and interactivity, has had a profound impact on higher education" (as cited by Sutherland and Stewart, p.1). According to Barnard (1997), "[U]niversity administrators, partially driven by market forces, value the Web as a vehicle to market their institution as well as to deliver distance learning" (as cited by Sutherland and Stewart, p.

Personal Statement (Oxford)
Personal Statement Every year, thousands of people all over the world apply the best of themselves to Oxford. Some believe in the distinguished faculties producing groundbreaking research that addresses critical issues facing our academia, while the others believe in the synergy between fundamental and applied research and the ââ¬Å"The Lord is my lightâ⬠approach, which foster intellectual partnerships between faculties and students. As an up-coming graduate in Economics, I yearned to further my postgraduate study for an Oxford master programme in the School of Geography and the Environment because of a passion running deep inside my thought. The passion is rooted from the place where I grew up, and sparked by a practice of enviromental change research I experienced recently. I grew up in Zhongwei, Ningxia, China ââ¬â a small oasis located in the junction between the Yellow River and Tengri Desert in northwestern China. My feeling on this land has been a complex mixture of love and sigh, as folks are nurtured by this land, but also tortured by frequent sand storms and very dry weather. During my college life in Jiangsu University, I, as a volunteer, participated in a research project to study the environmental changes and the corresponding socio-economic effects around Shapotou.I was impressed by the fresh scene of Shapotou, the place where once engulfed by desert has been covered mostly by vegetation. Because of the success in desert-control, Shapotou is known as a ââ¬Å"Miracle in the history of the worldââ¬â¢s desertification controlâ⬠. I was honored to be invited to participate in the field investigation led by Professor A from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Through participating in the research project, I obtained the knowledge on the history of the desert movement and principles governing the desertification control.I have also learned that the achievement of Shapotou desertification control project has attracted the attention of expe rts and scholars from many parts of the world, including the Dean of St Cross College of Oxford University, Professor who visited Tengri Desert with Professor Huang in 2007. Deeply impressed with the success of desertification control at Shapotou, I have been very interested in topics related to geography and environmental conservation since then. For this, I have done some studies on climate change, ecological protection, energy conservation and environmental economics. I have also been keeping in a close contact with Prof.A for consulting and discussing issues on geographical and environmental aspects. Through my contacts with Professor A, who used to be a research fellow at Oxford University, and many other sources including the information shown on the website of Oxford University, I understand well that Oxford University is one of the leading universities in geography in the world. Following my passion and maturing self-conscious, I started to draw my own blueprint catiously â â¬â I would make all my effort to earn an offer from Oxford University for studying in the programme of Nature, Society and Environmental Policy.Armed by the knowledge and skills I gained from my college study, I will dedicate myself on environmental protection in my hometown. I am truly convinced that choosing to become an Oxfordââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"dark blueâ⬠is the best choice to fullfill my lifeââ¬â¢s pursuit. I sincerely hope that I can be admitted as a postgraduate student of Oxford University, and I am very confident of my capability for completing my studies at Oxford University.

The Rise Of Communism In Russia Essays - Old Bolsheviks, Free Essays
The Rise Of Communism In Russia Essays - Old Bolsheviks, Free Essays The Rise of Communism In Russia "Unless we accept the claim that Lenin's coup d'etat gave birth to an entirely new state, and indeed to a new era in the history of mankind, we must recognize in today's Soviet Union the old empire of the Russians the only empire that survived into the mid 1980's" (Luttwak, 1). In their Communist Manifesto of 1848, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels applied the term communism to a final stage of socialism in which all class differences would disappear and humankind would live in harmony. Marx and Engels claimed to have discovered a scientific approach to socialism based on the laws of history. They declared that the course of history was determined by the clash of opposing forces rooted in the economic system and the ownership of property. Just as the feudal system had given way to capitalism, so in time capitalism would give way to socialism. The class struggle of the future would be between the bourgeoisie, who were the capitalist employers, and the proletariat, who were the workers. The struggle would end, according to Marx, in the socialist revolution and the attainment of full communism (Groiler's Encyclopedia). Socialism, of which "Marxism-Leninism" is a takeoff, originated in the West. Designed in France and Germany, it was brought into Russia in the middle of the nineteenth century and promptly attracted support among the country's educated, public-minded elite, who at that time were called intelligentsia (Pipes, 21). After Revolution broke out over Europe in 1848 the modern working class appeared on the scene as a major historical force. However, Russia remained out of the changes that Europe was experiencing. As a socialist movement and inclination, the Russian Social-Democratic Party continued the traditions of all the Russian Revolutions of the past, with the goal of conquering political freedom (Daniels 7). As early as 1894, when he was twenty-four, Lenin had become a revolutionary agitator and a convinced Marxist. He exhibited his new faith and his polemical talents in a diatribe of that year against the peasant-oriented socialism of the Populists led by N.K. Mikhiaiovsky (Wren, 3). While Marxism had been winning adherents among the Russian revolutionary intelligentsia for more than a decade previously, a claimed Marxist party was bit organized until 1898. In that year a "congress" of nine men met at Minsk to proclaim the establishment of the Russian Social Democratic Worker's Party. The Manifesto issued in the name of the congress after the police broke it up was drawn up by the economist Peter Struve, a member of the moderate "legal Marxist" group who soon afterward left the Marxist movement altogether. The manifesto is indicative of the way Marxism was applied to Russian conditions, and of the special role for the proletariat (Pipes, 11). The first true congress of the Russian Social Democratic Workers' Party was the Second. It convened in Brussels in the summer of 1903, but was forced by the interference of the Belgian authorities to move to London, where the proceedings were concluded. The Second Congress was the occasion for bitter wrangling among the representatives of various Russian Marxist Factions, and ended in a deep split that was mainly caused by Lenin his personality, his drive for power in the movement, and his "hard" philosophy of the disciplined party organization. At the close of the congress Lenin commanded a temporary majority for his faction and seized upon the label "Bolshevik" (Russian for Majority), while his opponents who inclined to the "soft" or more democratic position became known as the "Mensheviks" or minority (Daniels, 19). Though born only in 1879, Trotsky had gained a leading place among the Russian Social-Democrats by the time of the Second party Congress in 1903. He represented ultra-radical sentiment that could not reconcile itself to Lenin's stress on the party organization. Trotsky stayed with the Menshevik faction until he joined Lenin in 1917. From that point on, he acomidated himself in large measure to Lenin's philosophy of party dictatorship, but his reservations came to the surface again in the years after his fall from power (Stoessinger, 13). In the months after the Second Congress of the Social Democratic Party Lenin lost his majority and began organizing a rebellious group

The History of the Supercontinent Pangea
The History of the Supercontinent Pangea Pangea, also spelled Pangaea, was a supercontinent that existed on the Earth millions of years ago and covered about one-third of its surface. A supercontinent is a very large landmass that is made up of more than one continent. In the case of Pangea, nearly all of the Earths continents were connected into one large landmass. It is believed that Pangea began forming about 300 million years ago, was fully together by 270 million years ago and began to separate around 200 million years ago. The name Pangea is ancient Greek and means all lands. The term began being used in the early 20th century after Alfred Wegener noticed that the Earths continents looked like they fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. He later developed his theory of continental drift to explain why the continents looked the way they did and first used the term Pangea at a symposium in 1927 focused on that topic. Formation of Pangea Due to mantle convection within the Earths surface, new material constantly comes up between the Earths tectonic plates at rift zones, causing them to move away from the rift and toward one another at the ends. In the case of Pangea, the Earths continents were eventually moved so much over millions of years that they combined into one large supercontinent. Around 300 million years ago the northwestern part of the ancient continent of Gondwana (near the South Pole), collided with the southern part of the Euramerican continent to form one very large continent. Eventually, the Angaran continent, located near the North Pole, began to move south and it collided with the northern part of the Euramerican continent to form the large supercontinent, Pangea, by about 270 million years ago. It should be noted however that there was another separate landmass, Cathaysia, which was made up of north and south China that was not a part of the larger Pangea landmass. Once it was completely formed, Pangea covered around one-third of the Earths surface and it was surrounded by an ocean that covered the rest of the globe. This ocean was called Panthalassa. Break-Up of Pangea Pangea began to break up about 200 million years ago as a result of the movement of the Earths tectonic plates and mantle convection. Just as Pangea was formed by being pushed together due to the movement of the Earths plates away at rift zones, a rift of new material caused it to separate. Scientists believe that the new rift began due to a weakness in the Earths crust. At that weak area, magma began to push through and create a volcanic rift zone. Eventually, the rift zone grew so large that it formed a basin and Pangea began to separate. In the areas where Pangea began to separate, new oceans formed as Panthalassa rushed into the newly opened areas. The first new oceans to form were the central and southern Atlantic. About 180 million years ago the central Atlantic Ocean opened up between North America and northwestern Africa. Around 140 million years ago the South Atlantic Ocean formed when what is today South America separated from the west coast of southern Africa. The Indian Ocean was the next to form when India separated from Antarctica and Australia and about 80 million years ago North America and Europe separated, Australia and Antarctica separated and India and Madagascar separated. Over millions more years, the continents gradually moved to their current positions. Evidence for Pangea As Alfred Wegener noticed in the early 20th century, the Earths continents seem to fit together like a jigsaw puzzle in many areas around the globe. This is the significant evidence for the existence of Pangea millions of years ago. The most prominent place where this is visible is the northwestern coast of Africa and the eastern coast of South America. In that location, the two continents look like they were once connected, which they, in fact, were during Pangea. Other evidence for Pangea includes fossil distribution, distinctive patterns in rock strata in now unconnected parts of the world and the distribution of the worlds coal. In terms of fossil distribution, archaeologists have found matching fossil remains if ancient species in continents are separated by thousands of miles of ocean today. For example, matching reptile fossils have been found in Africa and South America indicating that these species at one time lived very close to each other as it is not possible to them to have crossed the Atlantic Ocean. Patterns in rock strata are another indicator of the existence of Pangea. Geologists have discovered distinctive patterns in rocks in continents that are now thousands of miles apart. By having matching patterns it indicates that the two continents and their rocks were at one time one continent. Finally, the worlds coal distribution is evidence for Pangea. Coal normally forms in warm, wet climates. However, geologists have found coal under Antarcticas very cold and dry ice caps. If Antarctica were a part of Pangea it is likely that it would have been in another location on the Earth and the climate when the coal formed would have been very different than it is today. Many Ancient Supercontinents Based on the evidence scientists have found in plate tectonics, it is likely that Pangea was not the only supercontinent to exist on the Earth. In fact, archaeological data found in matching rock types and searching for fossils shows that the formation and break-up of supercontinents like Pangea are a cycle throughout the Earths history (Lovett, 2008). Gondwana and Rodinia are two supercontinents that scientists have discovered that existed prior to Pangea. Scientists also predict that the cycle of supercontinents will continue. Currently, the worlds continents are moving away from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge toward the middle of the Pacific Ocean where they will eventually collide with one another in about 80 million years (Lovett, 2008).
